Rhonda is the name I gave this piece of salvage– it’s a cast iron fireplace cover from about 100 years ago. The artwork has a girl playing a mandolin in a wheat field. So I named her Rhonda, because ‘cast iron fireplace cover’ was too long to say. (It was a “help me” kind of day.) I bought her at the Kane County Fair in St. Charles a couple of years ago. Rhonda will greet everyone at our front door at the Logan Square Kitchen. She’s been lovingly restored by a great team of craftsman coordinated by James Knittle at the Great Lakes Art Studio in Evanston. We’ve been fortunate enough to salvage some beautiful tile that will surround her in our front vestibule. There are so many wonderful treasures that we’ve salvaged already, but Rhonda’s special in conveying the spirit of the Kitchen. One more little step…
